How Kindred works
Most dating apps are built to keep you swiping. Kindred is built to help you actually meet someone.
The problem with most dating apps
Engagement-optimised apps make their money from your time on the platform, not from you finding a match. They surface profiles to maximise swipes, not outcomes. They let heavily imbalanced gender ratios persist because more users means more revenue — even if most of those users never match with anyone.
Kindred takes the opposite approach. We want you to find someone and leave. That's how we know it worked.
Gender balance — enforced, not hoped for
Kindred actively enforces gender balance across its community. When the ratio tips too far in one direction, new sign-ups for that group are placed in a queue rather than activated immediately.
This isn't a penalty — it's fairness. A balanced community means everyone has a realistic chance of matching. On unbalanced platforms, the majority gender often receives almost no attention. On Kindred, that doesn't happen by design.
The current community breakdown is shown live on the home page. We don't hide it.
The queue — what it means
If your gender group is currently over-represented, your profile will be queued rather than activated immediately. Here's what that means in practice:
- You are not rejected. Your profile is complete and ready.
- The queue is first-in, first-out — no boosting, no paying to skip.
- As the community grows and balance opens, you are activated automatically.
- You receive an email the moment your profile goes live.
Queue times depend on how fast the community grows. During early launch, this could be days or weeks. We think transparency about this is more respectful than hiding it.
Likes and the free experience
Kindred gives every new member a genuine free experience — not a crippled trial:
- 5 likes per day on the free tier, for as long as it takes to get your first match.
- Once you've matched and had a conversation, you've experienced Kindred end-to-end at zero cost.
- After your free tier, you keep 1 free like per day — always. You are never fully locked out.
- Token packs let you send up to 20 likes per day when you want to move faster.
The daily cap exists to keep interactions thoughtful. Sending 200 likes a day isn't dating — it's spam.
What we don't do
- No secret attractiveness ranking or shadow sorting
- No paid profile boosts or pay-to-be-seen
- No algorithmic feed designed to maximise your time on the app
- No dark patterns — notifications engineered to pull you back in
- No selling your data to third parties
- No storing payment details — payments are handled entirely by Stripe
Frequently asked questions
Why is the gender breakdown shown publicly?
Transparency is a core part of Kindred's design. Showing the live balance lets you understand why a queue exists and hold us accountable to the fairness we promise. No other dating app does this. We think they should.
Can I game the system by changing my gender?
Your gender is set during onboarding and used for balance enforcement. Changing it to skip a queue would undermine the fairness the whole community depends on. We reserve the right to remove accounts that abuse this.
What happens when the community grows?
As more people join, balance naturally opens across all groups and queue times shrink. The enforcement thresholds are designed to be strict during early growth and self-correct as the community scales.
How much do tokens cost?
Token packs start at CHF 10 for 50 tokens. Larger packs offer better value. Tokens are only needed if you want more than 5 likes per day — the free tier covers your first full match experience at no cost.
What happens to my tokens if I delete my account?
Unused tokens are forfeited on account deletion. This is stated in our Terms of Service.
Is messaging free?
Yes. Messaging is always free once you've matched. We will never charge for conversations.
